In 2014 the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day falls on Monday, 19 May. It is not a national holiday of Cambodia. The day serves as a community mobilization campaign to break down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and to give hope to new generations. The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day is not a national holiday in Cambodia; however, the Day is celebrated with a number of activities.
To honor those affected by HIV and to give hope to people living with HIV, NGOs in Cambodia organize community education on HIV and AIDS (Transmission, Prevention and Treatment), promotion of voluntary counseling testing of HIV, writing articles, marching, organizing a forum, or a roundtable discussion to call for more actions to support people living with HIV, making anti retroviral accessible, calling for more action to help children infected and/or orphaned by HIV, greater actions to help strengthen preventative measures, promoting responsible behavior amongst youth and the general community and fighting against stigma and discrimination, new HIV infection and HIV-related deaths.
